What is the Difference Between a Realtor and Non Realtor

When you buy or sell a house you’re going to interact with a whole bunch of different titled real estate professionals. Many people don’t understand the difference and use the terms interchangeably. However, there are significant differences between these real estate professionals.

While many people get confused between brokers and agents (which we covered in a previous post), the big one that gets most people is the difference between Realtors and non Realtors.

What is a Realtor?

Realtors are real estate professionals that belong to the National Association of Realtors(NAR). Realtors can be brokers, associate brokers or agents. All Realtors are agents or brokers, but that doesn’t mean that all brokers and agents are Realtors.

In order to be a member of the National Association of Realtors you must adhere to their very strict code of ethics.

NAR actually was one of the first professional groups in this country to adopt a code of ethics all the way back in 1913. This code helps to ensure that consumer’s needs are being met by real estate professionals on both side of the sale. The NAR does not settle disputes between member Realtors and customers. All Realtors also belong to state and local trade groups and any disputes should be filed with the local board.

Who Should You Work With?

Realtors and non Realtors can both facilitate your real estate transaction. When it comes to what they are able to do, being a Realtor doesn’t change anything. A real estate professional’s duties and limitations are decided by local and state regulations, not trade association groups.

However, Realtors have gone the extra mile to belong to a group and adopt a strict code of ethics. They hold themselves to a higher standard.
